Our Christmas Book Advent Calendar Countdown

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***I started wrapping them and placing them under the tree. Each night we open a Christmas book to read together. I number them so we know which one to pick each day.

I LOVE Christmas! I know some moms begrudgingly go through the motions but I genuinely love the season and doing all the fun activities. One of the fun activities we enjoy is counting down to Christmas. I've written before about advent calendars. We have a Melissa and Doug magnetic advent calendar that we love but we also started another countdown tradition that combines my love of presents with my love of books. I really like focusing on the "waiting" part of advent with the kids because it's the first real exposure to the anticipation we feel as we await the arrival of Christ during the season.

October Budget Friendly Fashion Round-Up Part 2

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

I said I would do two Budget Friendly Fashion Round-Ups this month and I am being true to my word! Fitting a second one in has been a bit of a challenge with our schedule jam packed with fall family fun. I hope everyone is enjoying this time of the year as much as I am. The past few days we have actually had cooler temps at night and this is what inspired the theme for this Round Up.

When it comes to Autumn I think of pumpkins, leaves, and plaid flannel shirts. There's nothing more cozy to me for fall than a super soft flannel shirt. But plaid flannels are so much more versatile than my favorite LL Bean standbys. I'm so excited to share the different twists on this classic!

Attention Target Shoppers! Free No-Minimum Shipping!

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

In an effort to complete with Walmart and Amazon, Target announced this week it will be removing the $35 shipping minimum! Starting Nov. 1 and running through Dec. 22, "hundreds of thousands of items" will be eligible for free, two-day shipping on Target.com. This means you will be able to order  without having to meet purchase thresholds. This is the first time they have offered this.

“We want to make the busy holiday season easier for our guests so they can spend more time with their family and friends,” said Target CEO Brian Cornell. “From same-day delivery with Shipt, Drive Up, Free 2-Day Shipping and more, no other retailer can match the convenient delivery options that Target will offer this season. When you combine these services with our incredible assortment of exclusive brands, everyday low prices and skilled team, I’m confident Target will be America’s easiest and most enjoyable place to shop for the holidays and beyond.”

This is going to be a game changer for me, especially on Black Friday. Having to factor in shipping minimums makes it MUCH harder for me to compare prices. This is going to make things sooo much easier!

Is anyone else totally excited about this? Tell me in the comments!

Fun Fall Science Experiment- Will Pumpkins and Other Objects Sink or Float?

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

D has been really into science experiments lately thanks to preschool and wanted to do one today. At school they tested whether their class pumpkin would sink or float and he wanted to try it out at home with our pumpkins.

These little experiments seem simple but pack a TON of potential for teaching different concepts. We started out by going for a walk to gather some objects to test out in addition to the pumpkin. We found a leaf, a stick, some stones, a seed pod, and a flower. I think this is SUCH an important step and a great way to get littles out into nature. Both of my boys love to be outside.

To the Mom Who Never Gets A Break

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

Dear Mom Who Never Gets A Break,

I see you over there wiping the face of a tiny person while another cries next to you for a boo boo to be kissed. I know that the moment your feet hit the ground in the morning the whole essence of your being revolves around the needs of these tiny people who demand so much. I see the way you move from crisis to crisis while trying to maintain the functionality of a home that just never seems to be clean.

 I see you...

October Budget Friendly Fashion Round-Up Part 1

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

How on earth is it October already? This year is flying by! A new month means a new Budget Friendly Fashion Round-Up! I've been wanting to do these twice a month but it's been so hard to fit everything in so I am calling this Part 1 so I HAVE to do another one later in the month. Hopefully it works!

The looks I'm sharing this month are all about Fall with lots of pieces that will transition easily into winter. One of the things I have trouble with is owning pieces that only work for a single season. I know we all need winter coats and those types of essentials; but I want my style staples to transition and be heavy lifters in my wardrobe. The looks featured all have pieces that either help move your wardrobe into Fall/Winter or show how a summer piece can make the jump. I hope you love the looks as much as I do!

Fall Craft Bubble Wrap Tree Painting

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

Parenting confession: I have been seriously slacking on craft time with K. I thought with D in school it would be easier and I would do more fun crafts with the baby. This has not been the case. I feel like I'm constantly behind on things and more often than not craft time becomes "coloring book" time. So I'm setting a goal of 2 "messy" activities a week minimum with K so he doesn't get left out.

This one I'm pretty excited about because we used things we had on hand.

My Picks for the Hot Toys of 2018

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

Every year toy manufacturers produce new toys in hopes of lightning striking and producing the "It" toy of the year. Some years it's easy to predict (Cabbage Patch) and others not so much. The thing that has changed the landscape the most is that parents now have the ability to shop online. We are no longer slaves to brick and mortar shops.

All that being said, it still isn't a sure thing what will sell-out in a given year and nothing is a sure thing. But, we are already seeing some sell outs and it's barely October yet! My advice to parents when they ask in the Daily Deal Detectives Group is to shop EARLY. If you know your kid has to have something get it before the craziness hits in late November. I always work to post in stock alerts in the group but the closer to the holidays we get the harder toys are to get.

So without further ado here are the toys I think are going to be the most popular this holiday season.

September Budget Friendly Fashion Round- Up

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

I'm focusing on some fun Fall fashion trends for this month's Budget Friendly Fashion Round-Up. This post is quickly becoming my favorite to put together! I love looking at what everyone else is wearing and loving at the moment. I'm also living vicariously since it is still SO stinking hot here in Florida and I'm jealous that everyone else up North can already bust out their Fall clothes. This month's post is even bigger and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

2018 Advent Calendar Guide

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

Advent calendars have become big business! When I was a kid you moved a little doodad on a calendar and called it a day. Kids now have a plethora of options to celebrate each and every day counting down to Christmas and many of the biggest toy franchises have thrown their hat into the ring. What you choose for your family is going to be based on quite a few factors: age of your children, interests, whether you want one that can be used year after year or one that is consumable with toys etc. I will continue to update this post as more Advent Calendars are released. Also, join my Daily Deal Detectives Group on Facebook for in stock alerts and updates.

15 Junk-Free Stocking Stuffer Ideas For Toddlers and Little Kids

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

Stocking stuffers for little kids don't have to be plastic junk! Check out these 15 ideas for junk free Christmas stockings! #stockings #minimalism #christmas

It seems crazy that I'm sitting down to write this post and that it's already time to start thinking about Christmas! I swear time goes faster and faster every year. I've already begun buying gifts for the kids but I feel like stockings can be tricky for toddlers and preschoolers. Babies get baby toys. Tweens and teens love gift cards, Bath and Body works etc. But the little kids are the prime target for tiny plastic JUNK. I REFUSE to purposefully bring it into my house let alone pay good money for it. BUT I love Christmas stockings... so here is my list of ideas of surprises to put in your little kids' stockings that are still fun but also useful.

Character Band-Aids

Character Bandaids are exciting because I REFUSE to buy them during the year. Target usually has them for $1 in the Dollar Spot. Fair warning; prepare to have every invisible microscopic boo-boo require a bandaid for the next week lol.

Budget Friendly Gardening Tips

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

I've written before about how much my boys love nature and working in our garden. And I'm a firm believer that these experiences are vital to their development and their emotional wellbeing. One of the tough things about being on a budget is justifying the cost of garden supplies and plants, especially when you are renting. I believe that the expense is worth it and have a few tips and trips to create an awesome garden without the huge cost associated with hiring landscapers. This morning K and I went to Lowe's after we dropped D off at preschool and picked up a hanging plant, a potted hibiscus, 2 bags of mulch, and rocks for our rock garden for $15!

How I Work Out at Home for Free- No Equipment, No More Excuses!

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

One of the hardest things for me to figure out lately is how to workout with the kids. A gym membership isn't in the budget which means whatever I do I have to have them with me. I had been pushing them in the double jogging stroller but I wasn't really seeing the results I was hoping for (read- my weight plateaued). Plus, the kids are NOT always cooperative. Some days it felt like I was stopping  every 20 feet to pick up a shoes, get a cracker, refill a sippy cup etc.

Preschool Is Coming- And I'm Not Ready

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

A week from Monday marks a HUGE transition in our lives. D will start preschool. Up until this point he's always been with me. I am both so excited for him and so anxious. I don't normally write about the kids out of privacy concerns but I think this is such an important conversation to have.

You see this isn't just preschool; this is the culmination of 4 years of work to get my little preemie ready. We have spent THOUSANDS of hours in Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Feeding Therapy to help him do what his neurotypical peers can do instinctively. He has been a rockstar and worked hard toward each goal we set before him. And now it's time to let him fly. He's ready. I KNOW he's ready.

And yet...

Why I Embrace the Toy Clutter

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

*OR* Confessions of a Minimalist in a Sea of Toys

This weekend I organized and purged the boys’ toys. They “helped” with the process and we worked through discarding broken toys and selecting books and toys they have outgrown to pass on to others.

I came to a realization whist we were organizing: I have let toys take over our home. This was followed by an even more startling realization: I don’t mind it. Let me explain.

I tend to strive for a simple, minimalist lifestyle. I don’t have many wants and value experiences above things. I’m frugal and thrifty and wait for sales.  I think that’s why I was so shocked to realize how much of a toy and book enabler I am for the kids. I think a lot of it stems from infertility. For years the deepest desire of my heart was to have a home filled with the laughter of little ones. And for six years I waited with empty arms. Every baby shower and pregnancy announcement left me weeping bitter tears. The toy and book clutter is literally the fulfillment of my dream. I see a toy strewn living room and my heart swells with happiness. It’s completely crazy but it’s true.

I don’t want the boys to grow up entitled or spoiled so I do restrain myself a great deal. We purge as needed and make an effort to only keep things which are useful and loved. But, I don’t find myself irritated by what they do have the way I thought I would (or even the way my husband is). I often hear people say “I don’t want toys to take over my home” or read blog posts “How I keep the Kids’ Toys in Their Space.” This is SO not my home. It is lived in. The minute someone enters our home it is obvious we have small children. One of the dominant features in our living area is a cube storage unit with toys. “Goodnight Moon” and “Where the Wild Things Are” have replaced my history books on the shelves. And, truth be told, I wouldn’t want it any other way.

The time we have with small children is so fleeting. Someday the toys will be gone, the books will all be mine, and nobody will dump bins of stuff from one end of the house to the other. And I will miss the mess. I will miss their littleness, their playfulness, the scent of baby shampoo on their still wet heads. One day they will leave me.

And this is how it ought to be. That is, of course, the goal of child rearing. But, for now, I choose to enjoy their childhood and embrace the toy clutter, the sounds of lightsaber battles, and their precious little hands holding mine. I hold tightly to bedtime stories, Lego creations, and playing Star Wars for the hundredth time today. I discuss which Octonaut is my favorite with the seriousness I once reserved for foreign policy discussions. The time will come when I no longer have a home cluttered by toys. But, for today, I say “God bless this mess.”

Prime Day Device Deals!

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

I hope everyone is getting excited about Prime Day; I know I am! If you haven't read my list of tips you can check it out here. Amazon devices are generally at their BEST prices on Prime Day so I am getting the most questions about them! Here is my "Cheat Sheet" for Prime Day. I will update it as prices are released.

Make sure to join my Daily Deal Detectives group on Facebook where I will be live blogging the deals all day!

AMAZON ECHO DEVICE DEALS

For the uninitiated, Echo is Amazon's line of Alexa enabled Smart Home devices. They can play music, turn on your lights, adjust your AC and even run your robot vacuum! Right now Prime Members can get 4 months of Amazon Music Unlimited for only $0.99 here.

  • Echo Show: The Echo Show allows you to video chat using the built in screen.
  • Echo Spot: Same idea as the Echo Show but smaller with a cute little round screen.
  • Echo (2nd Gen): This is the "tower" that everyone thinks of when they think of Alexa devices.
  • Echo Plus: The difference between Echo and Echo Plus is that the Echo Plus has a hub to manage Smart Home devices built in. Check it out here
  • Echo Dot: A more compact version of the original Echo with a less powerful speaker.
  • Echo Dot Kids: This is basically the same as the Echo Dot but you get a case, a 2 year warranty and a year of Freetime Unlimited.

KINDLE FIRE DEVICE DEALS

Kindle Fire is Amazon's tablet line. There are several size/performance options depending on what your needs are.
  • Kindle Fire 7: Amazon's entry level tablet. 7" IPS display, a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, and up to 8 hours of battery life. 8 or 16 GB of internal storage and a microSD slot for up to 256 GB of expandable storage. Good value if you want a very basic tablet.
  • Kindle Fire 8:  8" HD display, a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, 1.5 GB of RAM, and Dolby Audio. 16 or 32 GB of internal storage and a microSD slot for up to 256 GB of expandable storage. A better value IMHO than the 7.
  • Kindle Fire 10: 10.1" 1080p Full HD display, up to 1.8 GHZ quad-core processor, 2 GB RAM, and up to 10 hours of battery life. 32 or 64 GB internal storage expandable by up to 256 GB (using the microSD slot). This thing is a BEAST! The specs are great but I would make sure you want one this big!
  • Kindle Fire Kids: The kid's version comes with a case, a 2 year-worry free guarantee and a free year of Freetime -- I PERSONALLY think this is the way to go if you have kids. Amazon will replace it if your kid breaks it no questions asked!

KINDLE E-READER DEVICE DEALS

I LOVE my Kindle E-Reader. In a world of tablets and smartphones I really appreciate how much easier it is on my eyes! Right now Prime Members can get a 3-month subscription to Kindle Unlimited for $0.99 here!
  • Kindle: The entry level Kindle without any bells and whistles. No Built in light.
  • Kindle Paperwhite: Higher resolution screen than the e-reader (twice as many pixels) and built in light. ABSOLUTELY no glare in the sun! This is my current Kindle and I LOVE it! I had the basic version and think this is worth it for the back lighting alone!
  • Kindle Voyage: The big difference between this and the paper white is PagePress (it enables you to turn the page without lifting a finger) and Adaptive front light (provides ideal brightness day or night).
  • Kindle Oasis:  ALL the bells and whistles lol! This is the first waterproof Kindle. It also is Audible enabled and has a larger screen.
  • Kindle for Kids: The latest Kindle without sponsored screensavers, a free cover, plus a 2-year worry-free guarantee. Set reading goals and track progress with Kindle FreeTim. Zero distractions since there aren't any apps or videos. If your kid is as destructive as mine are this is the way to go since it's comes with the warranty.

FIRE STICKS AND FIRE TV DEVICE DEALS

NICU Newborn Shadow Boxes

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

I’ve been meaning to post about our NICU shadow box displays for a while but just haven’t gotten around to it. Having a baby in the NICU is a life altering experience. There’s no other way I can think of to describe it. It’s a club nobody wants to belong to but once you do you feel a connection to every other parent who has ever held the impossibly tiny hand of their baby in an incubator. It’s simultaneously one of the saddest yet most peaceful places on the planet. I will never forget what it felt like to sit in the NICU at 2am gently rocking my baby while a dozen monitors quietly beeped around me helping the angel nurses to watch those precious babies. Disney lullabies played softly on a radio while the night nurses caught up with their charting. We celebrated every gram gained, every milliliter of breastmilk fed, every diaper wet. I watched as those warrior nurses stood up to a doctor and insisted a mama who had just had a c-section to impossibly early twins be allowed to enter in her wheeled bed instead of the standard wheelchair so she could touch them and meet them for the first time. And I cried with them as she reached from her bed to theirs to tell them just how much she loved them.

I wanted a way to pay tribute to this experience and a way to display some of the minutia we collected that would be worthless to anyone else but was so precious to me.

I decided to use these shadow box frames. I chose them because I liked the mat they included and I knew I didn't want gigantic frames- they were perfect!

I used scrapbook paper to line the bottom opening because I knew I wanted blue for the background. The tiny hats were hand knitted by volunteers. I appreciated them so much and they are so precious to me. I also included the teeny tiny hospital bands. The stars are just foam sticker shapes.

I had other items that could have been included but I didn't want a cluttered box. I thought about doing them with their coming home outfits but decided to stick with their hats. I love how they turned out!

Construction Truck Rock Garden: A Sandbox Alternative

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

I finished making this play area for the boys this weekend. There are a lot of reasons I went with gravel as opposed to sand but if I'm being brutally honest the biggest is that I HATE the mess sand makes. It gets everywhere, my kids track it all through the house, cats poop in it etc.

There are a few other reasons I avoided sand including reports that play sand could potentially be a carcinogen and the fact that we are renting and I needed to make something that I could easily return to its previous state. After doing some research I decided to go with pea gravel.

We already have a TON of toys including a water table and pirate kiddie pool cluttering up the tiny garden so I decided against adding something like a giant Little Tykes Turtle Sandbox.

Space concerns also ruled out building a large wooden sandbox. I finally had an idea after browsing Pinterest when I came upon this pin: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/54958057938327055/

It gave me the idea to carve out a play area out of one of our existing
flower beds.

This corner bed already had plastic landscaping tarp under it and I thought it would be easy to make the raised bed effect I was going for so I settled on that.

I purchased the following items for the project:
  • 7 scalloped stone borders (I only needed 6)
  • 3 bags of pea gravel (I wish I had bought 1 more and will probably add it soon)
The grand total for the project worked out to around $26.

The next step was to dig out an area for the rocks to go and to move the mulch to the center "raised" area. This took a lot of work. After I had the area dug out I added the border stones.

At this point I was ready to add the pea gravel but I already knew from researching there would be an issue. Pea gravel is FILTHY. It's basically coated in orange dirt. Since I wanted this to be cleaner than a sand box I had to wash the gravel. I used an old plastic planting pot with holes in the bottom.
***You could skip this step by using aquarium gravel but when I priced it out pea gravel was $3.88 a bag and aquarium gravel $20+ a bag. So I washed it lol.

Once I had the gravel nice and clean I added it to the garden and spread it out. Then I added the boys' trucks. We were gifted this CAT set. It's very nice but when they eventually break I will replace them with ones by Green Toys since they are more durable and made from recycled milk jugs.

I love how it turned out! The long length is perfect for driving the trucks (and apparently toy boats lol) and the pavers on the outside make nice little seats.

I know the boys will get HOURS of play time out of this area and it makes a nice sensory experience. When we eventually move, if our landlord doesn't want to keep it I can easily remove the border stones and spread the mulch back over the rocks. Easy peasy.

Let me know what you think in the comments! If you like it,  please share the post on Pinterest!

Fun Kids Activity: Floral Celery Stamp Paintings!

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

I've been meaning to try this for awhile and just never seemed to get around to it! We finally did it this week after I made a pot of homemade soup! D loved it and it was a fun use of something that would have just been composted!

We started by making the flowers by using the cut celery stalk. I used a chef knife to cut off the end evenly so it would stamp well. I let him use it to stamp craft paint flowers. I think they look like roses or carnations.

After admiring the flowers we decided we needed something more on our paintings so we used a single celery stalk to stamp green leaves on our paintings.

I love the final result! It was so easy and D had a lot of fun! These would make BEAUTIFUL greeting cards! I think I'm going to get some blank cards for him to stamp on next time. That way we can use them for birthday cards or thank you notes.

Boys' Pirate Room Reveal! + FREE PRINTABLE

***Post contains affiliate links. This means I earn a small commission off of purchases made through the links***

While we are FAR from completely moved in I have finished up the Boys' room and I'm so excited to share it! D requested a "Pirate Room" and we've used it as an incentive to try and get him to sleep in his own bed at the new house.

As much as I would have LOVED to buy him one of these fancy pirate beds like he wanted it just wasn't in the budget and he has a perfectly good bed so we are working with what we've got.

Since we are renting I couldn't paint or make major changes so I had to work with what was already there. I LOVE the way the room turned out.  I made it unapologetically pirate for D while weaving a few Peter Pan references in for added whimsy.

Since we couldn't buy him a pirate bed I splurged on this Little Tikes 4 Piece Pirates Toddler Bedding Set.  I think it really helped to make the theme more evident and cohesive. It was definitely a luxury purchase since we have TONS of bedding already but I don't regret the purchase since it made him so happy.

K is still sleeping in his Graco Pack N Play. I thought about trying to make a pirate cover for the top or something but who has time for that? Besides, he probably won't be in it much longer. When he starts climbing out I'll get him a matching bed or move D up to a twin and give him the toddler bed.

D's favorite part of the room is probably the pirate flag and it was a bargain Amazon buy.

The curtains and curtain rod both came from Target. I like how the curtains coordinate with the bedding and give the room a nautical feel.

I put their wood toy box by the window to double as a window seat. They both love sitting there and looking out the window. I love that they have a view of the lake!

My  favorite part of the room is this sign over the dresser that says "Little boys should never be sent to bed. They always wake up a day older." I ordered it from Etsy from seller Shiprock. It was one of the most reasonably priced wall pieces I could find and I LOVE the rustic feel the wood edges give the room! I still need to paint the wood initial letters red and hang them next to it but I just haven't gotten around to it yet with the chaos of moving.

Another favorite is this pirate ship framed picture with a paraphrased psalm on it. I couldn't find one that was exactly what I wanted so I made my own. You can download the print for free here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1J7tDsKGrvaiQAep_bpsKgM7dod5Ha3Zc

I rotate the boys' books so they are frequently changed out on this Tot Tutors Book Rack Shelf. I prefer this style book shelf because I find my boys pick out books more often when they can see the covers.

I hung their growth chart over the book shelf in an attempt to keep them from playing with it. I bought it when D was a baby for his first birthday so it's not *quite* on theme but I think it works.

The final touch was this Sun And Star Lighting Lamp I bought on a lightning deal. The boys love their starry bedroom ceiling at night.

Overall, I'm thrilled with how their room turned out! I tried not to make it too babyish so it can grow with them for awhile. Let me know what you think in the comments!
